However, fate had other plans, as the centenarian’s condition necessitated an airlift to a hospital upon arrival in Europe, where he breathed his last.

Honor Flight Rochester, an organization that had supported Persichitti’s commemorative journeys in the past, paid a heartfelt tribute to the fallen hero. Richard Stewart, the organization’s president and CEO, expressed the profound impact Persichitti had left, describing him as a “great friend” and a “very active participant” in their activities, adding that he “will be sorely missed.”

For Pastor William Leone, who had been friends with Persichitti for 46 years, the loss was deeply personal. He spoke of the “privilege to know him” and celebrated Persichitti’s “real zest for living.” Beyond his military service, Persichitti had made it a mission to share his experiences with younger generations, visiting local schools to recount the trials and triumphs of World War II.
