Ironically, this age-old travel hack is the very culprit behind delayed bag arrivals. Attaching ribbons, tags, or other accessories to suitcases – a common practice for making them stand out amidst hundreds of others on the carousel – can actually impede their journey.

The Ribbon Roadblock

According to John, a Dublin Airport baggage handler, these adornments can hinder the scanning process in the baggage hall. “If the bag can’t be scanned automatically, it can end up in manual processing, which could mean your bag doesn’t make it to the flight,” he revealed to RSVP Live.

While these embellishments may make spotting your suitcase a breeze, they attract unwanted attention from airport luggage scanners, potentially delaying your bag’s arrival.

Steer Clear of Sticky Situations

John advises against leaving old stickers on your suitcase, as they can confuse the scanning system. Moreover, packing marzipan (almond candy dough) in your luggage is a surefire way to get your bag pulled for inspection. “Don’t ever pack marzipan in your luggage. It has the same density as some explosives, so your bag will be removed and you’ll be called from the plane for a bag search,” the Dublin baggage expert warned.

Before bidding farewell to your suitcase at the drop-off point, ensure the wheels are up to avoid potential damage. While airlines are obligated to repair or reimburse passengers for damaged baggage, waiting for a resolution can delay your departure from the airport and hinder your ability to fully enjoy your trip.
