It was supposed to be the happiest day of her life, but Lydia Kessinger’s wedding day nearly didn’t happen after a bizarre incident the day before. As she and her soon-to-be husband, Alex, were transporting a king-size mattress to their new home, Lydia found herself in a precarious situation that could have ended in tragedy.
Attempting to secure the mattress by lying on top of it in the truck bed, Lydia’s plan went awry when the mattress suddenly lifted off the truck, carrying her with it. Traveling at a speed of 50 mph, the mattress landed in the middle of State Street in Provo, with Lydia still clinging to it.
The Harrowing Ordeal
The impact of the fall left Lydia “banged-up, scraped and bruised,” as she described it. Not only did she suffer significant road rash, but the force of the incident also knocked out her two front teeth. Miraculously, she managed to reach the side of the road without being hit by oncoming traffic, narrowly avoiding a potentially fatal outcome.
Despite the harrowing ordeal, Lydia’s determination to make it down the aisle remained unwavering. The incident occurred on April 26, and the very next day, she was a blushing bride, ready to exchange vows with her beloved Alex.
A Fairytale Wedding, Bandages and All
In the photos shared on Lydia’s Instagram from the couple’s big day, the bride can be seen wearing bandages on her arm and wrist, with cuts adorning her face – a stark contrast to the traditional image of a radiant bride. Yet, Lydia described the whole day as a “fairytale” and “magic,” her joy undimmed by the events of the previous day.
The Kessingers’ story serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of securing loads properly. As part of National Secure Your Load Day on June 6, the Utah Department of Transportation emphasized that items not properly secured can fall out and collide with other vehicles or pedestrians, causing serious injuries or fatalities.
A Lesson in Load Security
While Lydia’s ordeal may seem like an isolated incident, the potential consequences of unsecured loads are far-reaching. The Utah Department of Transportation’s message is clear: taking the necessary precautions to secure loads is not just a matter of convenience but a matter of safety for everyone on the road.
As the Kessingers embark on their new life together, their story serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of love to overcome even the most unexpected obstacles. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most magical moments can arise from the most unlikely of circumstances.
